GOAL: DISCERN

The BIG Secret Marketers Don't Tell You

Marketers don't tell you that you still have to do the leg work.

Their product may be the quickest, most painless, most effective way to solve your problem, and it could technically be true.

It saves you time, it's easy to use, and it does the job.

But be clear about what you're using the product for. Products can be tools which give you a mechanical advantage. But you buy them because of a psychological quirk that seeks out what's easy.

Always remember:

  • An AI tool that organizes your calendar won't increase your productivity.
  • A gym membership won't make you shed weight and gain muscle
  • A “superfood” won't increase your life span.
  • A thing that gets you that girlfriend/boyfriend may get you said girlfriend/boyfriend, but that relationship won't necessarily bring you the peace and happiness that you seek.

The real solution to the problems we try to solve are often already in us, and they're free. We don't really need the gimmicks.

  • Productivity comes from consistency and persistence - a daily routine planned out with pen and paper will work.
  • Shedding weight comes from eating less; gaining muscle can come from bodyweight exercises - at most you'll need an exercise mat.
  • Increasing your lifespan requires an overall lifestyle change, not just “superfoods.”
  • Until you find peace and happiness on your own, you'll never find it with anyone else.

These real solutions are hard to execute. They are real solutions, which touch on important aspects of our psyche, so they will always be hard.

Marketers will try to sell you a free pass. There's no such thing.
